Bridgewater

Bridgewater is named after a large Georgian building which is now the Duke of Bridgewater Inn it was originally a master potter’s house. In 1841 the factory and the house were occupied by George Phillips who by then had been a pottery manufacturer for 19 years.  He employed between 400 and 500 people at his factory. George Phillips was born in 1802 and died in 1847 from diabetes.  His death led his wife Emily Irwin Onge to pack up her 8 children, servants and livestock and immigrate to Australia in 1852.  George and Emily are our 3rd Great Grand-Parents.

Fairview

Fairview is named after the home of George Onge Phillips and his wife Ellen North.  Ida Phyllis Traves, our Nanna was born in Kilcoy in 1912 but in 1930 her Father moved the family to a farm in Lower Wonga, she married our Poppy, Roger Halley Phillips in 1937, and they were quite well set up for marriage, Nanna had a huge glory box and Pop had worked hard on the roads in Kilkivan to buy furniture.  They had a good life.  They enjoyed their time at “Fairview” George and Ellen’s farm (Our Great Grand-Parents).  Milking 160 cows a day took its toll and money was in short supply so the farm was sold in the early 1950’s and Nanna and Poppy were given $1500 and they bought their own farm at Glastonbury, they lived there for 21 years, before moving to Gympie.

Bellevue

Bellevue is named after the family home of Major William Northand his wife Sarah Marsh (Our 3rd Great Grand-Parents).  He was born in 1783 in Dublin, Ireland. They married in 1806 and came to Queensland on the Amelia Thompson in 1838. The earliest sections of Bellevue homestead date from the 1870s.  Initially, Bellevue was part of the Wivenhoe run, taken up by Ferriter and Uhr in the early 1840s; it was then transferred to the North’s of Fairney Lawn in 1858. Soon after acquiring Wivenhoe, William North Snr established a 2,000 hectare section as Bellevue Station, on which he ran sheep. In 1869 the Wivenhoe run was resumed and thrown open to selection, and those portions containing the Bellevue lands and buildings were retained by the Norths under pre-emptive selection rights. It is probable that none of the 1860s buildings survived, with the older parts of the present homestead most likely constructed after the North family transferred the Bellevue leasehold to Campbell and Hay in 1872.  That said, the homestead is a reminder of the Norths and their significant contribution to early settlement.  The Major was known as the father of sheep in Queensland.

George Phillips was the patriarch of the family, born in 1834 in Staffordshire England he immigrated to Australia with his mother and 7 siblings in 1852.  George was instrumental in the development of Queensland, as an Explorer he accompanied William Landsborough on several expeditions, laying out many towns.  He was a Surveyor and Civil Engineer.  Later in life, he entered the political arena, and he was also an Author.
